The new title does not detract from the majestic beauty of this historic volcano town. Rabaul town itself is situated within a caldera and surrounded by active and inactive volcanoes. Active Mt Tavurvur in Rabaul now has the status of the longest erupting volcano known to man.
Evidence of previous occupation of Rabaul by Germans, Australians, Chinese , Japanese and Malays exist in many forms while the local indigenous inhabitants defiantly exist alongside elements of a powerful, unpredictable Mother Nature.
Rabaul harbour exudes an allure unparalleled with other harbours. Observatory hill and Namanula hill deliver excellent vantage points for photographers whose creativity and imagination are whetted by an inspiring environment.
The Rabaul market presents an array of exotic, fresh food and a variety of local artefacts to generate the visitors’ abilities to bargain and barter.
