New Ireland Sailing Adventure

Tour Description:

Sail 101 Tour (8 Day/7 nights) provides to our guest a week long sailing adventure around the beautiful and untouched tropical islands in New Ireland Province.

This is an opportunity for our guests to spend a few days sailing from island to island - snorkelling, swimming, fishing and relaxing in one of the world’s most unspoilt tropical playgrounds.

Each day will offer a new and exciting experience and evenings will include a freshly prepared meal served up with a different exotic backdrop every night.

The Tour will head west from Kavieng through the maze of islands dotting the passages between New Ireland and New Hanover (Lavongai), as well as the string of islands around the north and west side of New Hanover.

Try your hand at sailing or just sit back and relax!

Tour Itinerary:

Day 1: Depart Brisbane to Port Moresby and guest will transit to the domestic terminal. A SSH representative will meet and greet client at the airport.
Depart Port Moresby to Rabaul – Meet and greet by SSH Representative and guest will be transferred to Rapopo plantation resort. Overnight stay.

Day 2: Depart to Kavieng – Pick up and transfer to Tiki Tu, moored at Nusalik Island. We set sail to any number of beautiful islands depending on your interests and the winds. A usual stop on the first day is Ral Island, an amazing, tiny desert island with excellent white sand beach and fantastic snorkeling. Surf here in season on either the right or left hand breaking waves. Enjoy a picnic lunch on the island, and relax into your first day in paradise. We would move onto another island in the late afternoon, trawling for dinner as we go, and enjoying a peaceful sunset at another perfect location.

Day 3: After a morning swim or snorkel, we would set sail again, heading further northwest up towards the Tsoi Island Chain, where friendly communities and idyllic islands are on offer. Torquoise waters, amazing beaches, island passages to explore, and excellent fishing opportunities await through the Isabel Channel, and we can stop and spend the night anchored close to Mansava Adventure Lodge or Tsoilik Lagoon Guesthouse to enjoy a traditional island feast, and some of the most hospitable people on earth in one of the planet’s most beautiful and peaceful locations.

Day 4: Awake to the singing of children, and the aroma of freshly brewed PNG coffee. Today we start to head up into the rarely visited islands of North Lavongai. The islands abound in fish species just waiting for you to catch them. We trawl from the stern whilst sailing, and mainly catch pelagic (surface dwelling) species such as Mackerel, Tuna and Giant Trevally. Regardless of where we drop anchor, you will be welcomed by a flotilla of children on canoes with wide-eyed enthusiasm. A walk through the island with the children is a must, and a very memorable experience. The houses are built using traditional materials and their transport is by way of dugout canoes. They have an amazing sense of spirit, and they care for one another like one big family. They welcome visitors with open arms, as it is not something that happens everyday. Being the only yacht charter operation visiting the area on a regular basis, the people that we visit are our friends and are only too happy and proud to show you around their little piece of paradise. See outrigger canoes being carved, and creative weaving, and enjoy the traditional island lifestyle and the extreme generosity and honesty of people living as they have for centuries.

Day 5: The rivers of Lavongai are awesome to take a trip in the dinghy, with overhanging trees and picturesque villages. See sago being prepared, climb a Buai (betelnut) palm and have a chew with the locals, or head up at night time and keep your eyes peeled for puk puks (crocodiles) – even though we’ve never actually seen one yet. Head off sailing again to experience another island, as every island has fringing reefs offering the chance to snorkel at a different location everyday, right off the yacht. Shallow wrecks from World War II around the Three Island Harbour area allow snorkellers the opportunity to experience a look at history normally restricted to divers. The water is clean and warm, visibility is excellent and the tropical fish very, very friendly.

Day 6: By Day 6, we will be needing to leave our new found friends, and start to head back towards Kavieng. We can visit any location you have already enjoyed, or explore any number of the 149 islands in the area – fishing, snorkeling, swimming, surfing or just plain relaxing.

Day 7: Return to Kavieng - There are many spots to stop along the way depending on whether you feel like a surf, snorkel, fish or island to explore. Group will check in at The Malagan Beach Hotel.

Day 8: Depart Kavieng to Brisbane (via Port Moresby)
